Razz is a stud poker game that is similar to 7 Card Stud
Razz, a form of stud poker, is played with a standard 52 card deck. It is an exciting game that involves techniques and skills of a good poker player. Razz is a good variation because it has very few conventional poker rules.
Razz is a variation of the well known game of Seven Card Stud Poker (7-Card Stud for short). In Razz, however, you have to try and make the lowest hand possible. Also unlike 7-card Stud or other poker games, there are no community cards in Razz. Each player is dealt their own separate cards and has to use them to make the lowest possible hand with just the cards that they were dealt.
Razz poker Rules
Razz is a simple variation of 7 card stud poker in which all cards have a face value of 10 and Aces are the lowest possible cards. The game is best with three players, but it works fine with just two. One advantage Razz has over Texas Hold’em is that all the action takes place at once, so by playing you can easily keep tabs on what every player at your table has in his hand. There are no betting rounds: everything happens on a single deal.
Razz Poker Strategy
The basic strategy is very simple. You always take a card and try to make your hand better. The only times you don’t want to take a card are when the dealer has a face card showing (because then it’s too likely the next card will be another face card), or when the dealer has a 10-value card showing (because taking a card will bust you), or when you have three of a kind and don’t have an Ace to go with it (because then there’s no way to improve your hand). In other words, if any of those things happen, just stand and wait for the dealer to draw one more card so that something else might happen.
In practice, what this means is that when the dealer has an Ace showing, it’s actually better not to have an Ace in your hand. Because if you take a card and it’s another Ace, then you’ll bust! So always take cards from the dealer until he shows a 10-value card or until he shows two face cards in a row.
Razz Hand Rankings
Conventional poker rankings say you have to have a great hand to win. Razz is quite the opposite. You want a lousy hand. The goal in razz is to get the lowest possible hand. In normal ‘Aces to Five’ razz, straights and flushes do not count against you-only pairs, three of a kind, and four of a kind do give you a high hand which is not good. Ideally, you want to be able to put together five unique low cards – Ace through Five (the worst) or Ten through Two (the best). Basic strategy will get you so far; eventually you will need some luck if you are to win consistently.
The following are a few of the most important elements of razz strategy when playing as the bring-in player:
- Antes and bring-ins
These are key elements of the betting action in razz. Because antes and bring-ins are forced bets, bringing the pot can be done at any time, regardless of what cards you hold in your hand. It is important to pay attention to these elements because they can change the nature of your strategy and will often determine how you play your hand. For example, if you are sitting on a good hand that is likely to be called by an opponent who is sitting on a weaker hand (with a lower door card showing), then it might be worth stealing antes, because you are going to win the hand regardless. If you have a strong enough hand that you feel comfortable stealing the bring-in bet (especially when there is not an ante), then you should definitely do so, because it gives you control over the pot and allows you to dictate your own betting action.
- Challenge bets
Another component of razz strategy is challenging opponents who are perceived as weak by raising or reraising them out of their hands before they have a chance to make their move.
